Cece Vee lays bare a grinding cacophony of uncomfortable emotions in her new EP, This Wasteland. Hinged on electro-pop strains and undeniably dystopian backdrops, she chronicles her recent experiences post-heartbreak.
Mental health has never felt more explored in music than it is these days, but Vee brings her own unique view to the table here, bookending the EP with a clarion call to feel your feelings and relinquish the shame that might come along with them.
Opener and lead single “Holiday” is a ringing dance-pop appeal for just that – to escape the monotony of life and cut loose a little. The reality that this peace of mind is hard to find, even when allowing yourself some time off is echoed in the colour-blocked music video which drops alongside the EP today.
Hazy escapism meets shadowy reality in “Wishes”, fibrillating bass and thudding rhythm navigate the fleeting honeymoon period of relationships in “Shooting Stars”, while “Self Doubt” gets searingly candid on being your own worst enemy. Perhaps the most visceral track off the offering, it pulls no punches in breaking down just how her mind perpetuates her suffering.
But when the final, grating chords of “Funeral For The World” – which highlights the gritty edges of our society with uncomfortably honesty – fade away, Vee changes tack and lapses into acoustic delicacy in closer “Wasteland”. Pitching delicacy allows her to fully mourn the loss of the relationship which cast her into this very wasteland, as Vee demonstrates her versatility with impressive finesse.
