There really was nothing like the Avontoer. A bunch of Seerowers (pirates) crammed into two buses along with their favourite bands embarking on a trip of a lifetime up the coast during summer holidays in December. It really was as epic as it sounds.
I never made it onto the actual bus, but I followed the trail of rum and general debauchery up the east coast all the way to Jeffreys Bay and back. Those were the fucking days. And as much as I’ve tried over the years to detail it, you really did need to be there.
Luckily, a new brand new documentary about the origins of Avontoer called Vergeet Van My is set to premiere at this year’s Silwerskermfees in August, and I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about any sort of premiere. Produced by DPK Productions, the team behind the Avontoer excersions, this documentary is “a golden circle ticket for a time capsule” and was made for anyone who’s ever asked me to explain what went down during those gigs.
The documentary premieres Wednesday 28 August at 11:30am and tickets are available on Quicket.
