Mr. Heinz is incredibly diverse. His ability to shift from a more playful approach to hip-hop was made evident when he dropped “Spitbraai” followed by the insanely impressive EP Bishop Lavis, all within one year.
The stark contrast of sounds and influences in these projects clearly indicates that Mr. Heinz is in a league of his own. His latest single “Tittewyt” picks up a sound similar to “Spitbraai,” with humorous lyrics that make it one of his most memorable tracks yet.
The title translates to “dolling up” in English, featuring none other than Jack Parow, built around a beat heavily infused with bass house elements. Produced by Jayms, it echoes dance styles popularised in the UK during the ’90s, defined by a four-on-the-floor rhythm.
“All she wanna do is tittewyt” comes as a playful chorus refrain capturing the essence of this tongue-in-cheek track – the fact that it takes women so goddamn long to get ready.
Mr. Heinz’s talent shines through as he balances style and humour, creating a cohesive narrative with clever ad-libs and a sharp rhyme scheme. Jack Parow complements Mr. Heinz’s delivery with his quintessential flow. Together, they highlight the lighthearted side of the Afrikaans hip-hop scene; catchy and relatable, delivering skilful humour.
The rise of artists like Angie oeh, Biggy and Mr. Heinz has certainly sparked a resurgence in Afrikaans rap, reminiscent of when Southern US hip-hop began blending with club-oriented music, adopting a more upbeat approach to themes. “Tittewyt” is a strong continuation of this resurgence, celebrating both the old and the new.
In the meantime, ladies, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with taking your time. Please, keep on tittewyting.
