August had a whirlwind of incredible new music to offer, from local legends to emerging talent to global mainstays. Here the definitive roundup, curated by our writers.
The top spot absolutely had to go to Will Linley with his new track “Just Because I Called You”. Off the back of his Lolapalooza debut and a string of local shows, Will is pretty unstoppable right now, and his latest offering is proof of that.
Mikhalé Jones features with “It Ain’t Me” – a nostalgic ’90s R&B ballad recalling the sounds of Brandy and Aaliyah. Jones is making music on her own terms, and it shows.
Moonchild Sanelly takes the third spot with her audacious new single “Big Booty” – a dirty, groovy reiteration of her future-facing Afro-tech sound. This comes after she made her debut COLORS show last month and subsequently announced a partnership with Penquin and the TEARS Foundation, leading a campaign against domestic abuse.
Our fav pop-folk duo Coasters also feature with their brand new single “The Mother / Father Song” – a tender accomplishment of brilliant acoustic measure. We love you guys.
Mr. Heinz and Jack Parow feature with their tongue-in-cheek track “Tittewyt” – but the reason we love it is because it’s a hard, danceable resurgence of Afrikaans rap.
Other highlights include Elle E’s first Afrikaans single “Probleem Kind” and Archi with his daring alt-pop debut, while international picks include “Guess” by Charli XCX featuring Billie Eilish, “Dafodil” by Jamie XX and “Chasing Low Vibrations” by Foster The People.
Enjoy!
