A superstition from the old country says that when your left ear whistles, kiss your lover, but when your right ear whistles, call your lover.
Well, sometimes you don’t need whistling ears to tip you off. Sometimes all you need is an overly friendly, morally ambiguous best friend. That’s what Andre Graham’s latest and aptly titled single “Bestfriend” is all about.
Following the success of Graham’s previous single “Around the World” released in 2023, “Bestfriend” is a quick take on the complexities of relationships steeped in insecurity, jealousy, and perhaps the right amount of suspicion.
Produced by Luke Goliath, the track hits hard and fast, sustaining a tempo from start to finish that feels like the tipping point in a story about infidelity. Graham’s songwriting flirts a little bit with despair and a lot with frustration, giving in to every dark doubt one might have about a cheating partner.
The combination of uninterrupted tempo and the delivery of the lyrics kind of makes you uneasy. It’s a discomfort that anyone who’s lived a similar situation might be very familiar with.
“This song represents a situation that I think quite a few people in relationships find themselves in,” says Graham. “You desperately want to hold onto your relationship, but you have this sinking feeling that there is something going on behind your back.”
It’s a radio-friendly piece that draws some clear inspiration from artists like The Kid LAROI, Justin Bieber and if you squint your ears (yes, it is possible) you may even hear the ghost of modern “edgy” Ed Sheeran.
With clean, big ticket production elements (a la Goliath) and a very pop-alternative vocal, this song has the makings of an earworm, but more so, an extremely polished piece of music.
