The local punk scene gets more and more electrifying in this latest development, with a new movement called Soweto Punk.
Soweto Punk is an initiative formed by Tshepang Ramoba (drummer for BLK JKS), Musa Zwane of Shameless, and Sandile Mbatha from TCIF, with the aim of elevating punk music across the country.
Soweto Punk is dedicated to nurturing local talent by organising events, securing record deals, creating merchandise and offering management support for up-and-coming punk bands. With the mission to give a platform to the raw energy of South African punk, Soweto Punk is set to make waves both locally and beyond.
The first event, happening on 30 November 2024 in Rockville, Soweto, promises to be one for the books. Featuring favourites Shameless and Twenty One Children, alongside rising stars Aura Electric, Zondo Commission and Weird Fruits, the show is a MUST SEE.
There will also be a vinyl release of the performances, secured through a deal with the Ugandan promoter Nyege Nyege.
Tshepang Ramoba expressed the significance of the initiative, saying, “Rock is back and it’s black.”
The event aims to showcase the vibrant punk culture growing in Soweto and highlight the often-overlooked contributions the genre makes to local music.
Tickets for the event are available here.
Don’t miss your chance to be part of this game-changing moment in South African music.
