Steve Umculo’s collaboration with Grammy-winning Soweto Gospel Choir just got the music video it needed, and we’re living for it.
“We’re Alright” was written from the perspective of a someone in a relationship problematically deemed taboo, whether it be a same sex, inter-religious or interracial romance. Challenging this outdated belief, the track’s afro-centric, slash-folk melody drives home a message of acceptance and hope in the modern world.
The graceful music video features contemporary dancers driving home the duo’s lyrical intent. Soweto Gospel Choir’s enchanting “kulungile” refrain (translated to “it’s alright” in English) provides the golden thread if you will, a kind of call-and-response vocal that both consoles and inspires.
Umculo’s eclectic style is championed by this fruitful collaboration, taken from his upcoming debut album Elements. It carries his signature acoustic sound, but with the added texture of Soweto Gospel Choir’s anthemic vocals.
And so the dancers move through concrete landscapes and breathtaking monuments, their energy aptly felt, coming together for one final chorus.
