Snowing Down South have made a triumphant return after nine years with new single “Birds Above My Bed” and we couldn’t be happier to see them again.
Driven by a sultry guitar riff, the song, written over a decade ago, showcases the band’s untapped potential. With lyrics about isolation and loneliness, frontman Paul sings, “And who’s gonna lay down my head, turn off the lights and go to bed?”
The words explore a longing for connection, but its meaning remains open to interpretation. Drawing from early Arctic Monkeys and Kings of Leon, while simultaneously adding a mature edge closer to the sounds of Bruce Springsteen’s later career, this is Snowing Down South at their most versatile.
The song is paired with a simple but effective visualiser, featuring the band in Cape Town drinking, laughing and singing together, reinforcing their refreshed sense of camaraderie – one gets the feeling that the band is here to stay, at least for a little while.
And if this track is any indication of where things are headed, it no doubt marks a new era for Snowing Down South.
