From the moment I saw R&B singer-songwriter Amanda Reifer’s Colors performance six months ago, I knew it was only a matter of time before she would start popping off. I consider her new single “RUDUMB?” the catalyst for this trajectory. Produced by Pharrell Williams and co-written by Kendrick Lamar, it’s the third single from her anticipated debut album, The Reifer Files, dropping later this year.
From the moment the beat kicks in, “RUDUMB?” feels like classic Pharrell, with its slick bass thump and instantly recognisable drums. Amanda slips right into this slinky groove, taking charge without apology and bossing up. Her confident cadence dominates the field as she teases, “Drop everything you got for a Bad Bajan.” It climaxes on the funky and fiery refrain, “I mean I get it, but I don’t. RUDUMB, boy?”
“The song was born out of the frustrations of being underestimated as a woman in the world, in career, in love, in business,” Reifer tells us. “Working in the studio with masters will really bring out parts of yourself that you’ve tucked away or have been shy to explore, and I’m so grateful to have been given the space and environment by these prolific men to create a record like this.”
“When we wrote this record I really wanted to give voice to that part of being a woman that is often forced to be censored and made small for the comfort of others. Sharpening my pen in the studio with the lyrical master Kendrick Lamar and having so much fun doing it really brought me confidence in expressing that women should take up the space that we deserve!”
Clocking in at 1 minute and 58 seconds, this track is packing all the right dancefloor-rooted punches and we’re here for it and the upcoming album.
