Phil Higgins releases a nostalgic, DIY music video for “Yours Truly, Julie”

South African singer-songwriter Phil Higgins has been laying low for a while, but last week Friday she made a woozy, loved-up return to the scene with “Your Truly, Julie” – which featured on our dedicated Valentine’s Day playlist, Love Stream.

It’s a heartfelt, acoustic love letter to those still finding their way, taken from her upcoming EP Blue + Green, set for release later this year.

And now Higgins has dropped a deeply personal, deeply nostalgic visual companion to the song. Filmed in Vroesenpark, Rotterdam, the video was conceptualized by Higgins herself and shot in an intimate, DIY style with the help of her friends, embracing the raw, authentic energy that has come to define her sound.

“I wanted the music video to feel like a glimpse into someone’s life—like a personal diary entry,
capturing a single moment in time,” Higgins shares. “Parts of it represent being present and connected,
while others capture the feeling of figuring things out on your own. The video has the same wholesome
energy I get from spending a carefree day in the park with my friends, and that’s exactly why I asked
them to help me film it, and be in it.”

Adding to the charm, the video was shot using a tiny, toy-like camera. “We didn’t change any settings before filming, so the timestamp hilariously reads 2019, even though we filmed at the end of 2024,” says Higgins. “That unexpected touch just made it feel even more like a found memory.”

“Yours Truly, Julie” is a sweet, sweet anthem of hope. Hope that you may find the courage to pursue your dreams.

Inspired by a real letter from someone named Julie, Higgins explains, “I wrote this song after finding her
letter, saying that she was moving away to chase her dreams. Sometimes you have to let people go so
they can become who they need to be.”

Blending indie textures with rich tinges of ’80s pop, Phil Higgins has crafted a soulful, playful return. “This is my first new single in three years, so it’s kind of a reintroduction—my way of saying: Hi! I’m back!”
