I remember the first time I heard Meccamind’s “Straight Vibin'” back in 2021 and thinking, this guy’s a total breath of innovative fresh air, so much so that we included him in our Best of 2021 Indie Newcomers list. Four years on and he hasn’t lost his unique edge.
His video for new single “Tutor” leans into that Windows ’95 nostalgia, featuring old school aesthetics and chat group imagery that throwbacks to a time when self-expression and online culture were evolving in new and exciting ways. This is interpolated into a straightforward cutesy date night scenario where Mecca and his girl are, well, vibin’.
The song itself is a tribute to the 2010 era of Hip-Hop where rap entered mainstream US culture, drawing inspiration from Cali Swag District’s “Teach Me How to Dougie”, a sound that was a major influence on Meccamind when he was growing up.
