There are three kinds of people when it comes to Mogwai. Those who love them, those who can’t stand them, and those who are indifferent. And the same might soon be said of Shuggah, a post-rock artist set to make her mark on the local alternative scene with a debut that defies easy categorisation.
Her first single “Amas Veritas” is an avant-garde experiment that hints at a bold creative direction. Written, produced and performed entirely by Shuggah, the track is a textured slow-burn, layered with electric elements and weighty guitars and drums. It simmers with intensity, drawing listeners into a brooding sonic landscape.
According to Shuggah, the track was inspired by the timeless myths of the Greek gods, tales of love, tragedy, war and the defiance of death. That ancient influence bleeds into the music, including the self-directed video that accompanies it.
The video, much like the song, leans heavily into abstraction and mysticism. Created in moody monochrome, it features a few symbolic scenes—fire, birds, mountaintops, and a lone figure wielding a sword.
Shuggah doesn’t just introduce herself on this track, she challenges listeners too. It’s a debut that values feeling over form; experimentation over expectation, and this is perhaps a sign that Shuggah is here to shake things up.
