With the recent return to the stage of blink-182, coupled with the global resurgence of pop-punk, South Africans have been hoping and praying that a blink-182 tour would be on the cards.
Instead, we’ve gotten the second best thing to celebrate the spirit of one of the best pop punk bands to ever do it – a blink-182 tribute band with a South African twist.
Featuring rock legends Garth Barnes (CrashCarBurn), Jono Bell (Wonderboom), Hein Kruger (Straatligkinders), and lauded session guitarists Duncan Laubscher, this tribute band brings the pop-punk chaos and anthems of the 2000s to life.
“Blink-182 was just such a huge part of a very exciting time in my life,” Garth explains. “It was the soundtrack to my 20’s and still lives on my Spotify playlist in heavy rotation. To play these songs live is going to be so much fun: a time machine back to some of the best party-days I can remember, I can’t wait!”
“Blink was everything growing up,” Jono explains. “The Mark, Tom and Travis live album blew my mind. Travis Barker’s skill, speed and creativity still inspires me today. That’s still my favourite album of all time. I can’t wait to play these songs live. It’s gonna be awesome.
“You remember when you were able to record on empty tapes from your hi-fi?” Hein asked. “Me and my brother would record the Barney Simon show on 5fm on tape so that we could listen to Tweak and other local acts on the way to school. Getting to perform songs we all grew up on with local legends is kinda like a full circle moment for me. Amped!
“I was a bit late to the show, only being a kid around the time of Blink, Tweak and the soundtrack to so many teens and young adults trying to figure life out,” Duncan confessed. “Then as I hit my angsty teens I was introduced to these bands that helped me find an output to all my feelings. Now I get to play those songs with the legends I listened to growing up, so I am stoked to share the nostalgia and stage with pillars of the local music scene and have a jol with you legends that still carry the torch today.”
Expect loud guitars, fast drums, terrible jokes… and all the small things. Get your tickets to one of their two shows in October below now, they’re bound to sell out.
