For decades, punk has existed as music’s most defiant dialect, rejecting systems and embracing anarchy. But despite its angst and insubordination, punk is a culture built around community and shared resistance. A new book, History Of Punk Rock Around The World, traces the story of punk’s rise from the underground to a global cultural phenomenon, documenting how punk scenes developed far beyond the movement’s origins in London, New York, and Los Angeles. Published by Sastrugi Press, the book features interviews and commentary from artists, promoters, filmmakers, and scene veterans across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and beyond.
For South African readers, the project also acknowledges punk’s often overlooked local history. Among the contributors are members of legendary South African punk outfit Safari Suits, alongside filmmaker David Chislett, producer of the documentary Punk in Africa. Released in 2012, Punk in Africa documented the role punk and alternative music played across South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe during apartheid and beyond, exploring how underground scenes became spaces for political resistance, identity formation, and cultural rebellion. Their inclusion here reinforces how deeply African punk movements shaped the genre’s wider global story.
Written by Czech authors Vítek Formánek and Eva Csölleová, the book positions punk less as an adaptable cultural response to repression. That framing feels particularly relevant when viewed through a South African lens, where punk often emerged not simply as fashion or attitude, but as an oppositional force during periods of political tension and censorship. History Of Punk Rock Around The World appears interested in placing those histories alongside the better-known Western canon.
With rare stories, firsthand perspectives, and a global scope rarely covered in punk literature,
History Of Punk Rock Around The World offers an extensive look at one of the most influential
underground movements in modern history.
