The Johannesburg Queer Chorus is celebrating artists who changed culture by refusing to play by the rules. On 27 June, the choir will present ICONS at the Roodepoort Theatre, a new production dedicated to the musicians, performers, and cultural figures who challenged convention and expanded what was possible. From Brenda Fassie and Johnny Clegg to Madonna, the show pays tribute to artists whose influence continues to resonate across generations.

Described as a high-energy choral celebration of rebels, disruptors, and visionaries, ICONS promises soaring harmonies, bold arrangements, and a programme built around themes of resistance, pride, and possibility. Rather than simply revisiting familiar songs, the production explores the cultural impact of artists who dared to challenge the status quo, using music as a lens through which to celebrate creativity, self-expression, and collective joy.

The performance also continues the Johannesburg Queer Chorus’ ongoing mission of creating spaces for connection through music. Open to LGBTQIA+ community members and allies, the choir has established itself as a vibrant and inclusive presence within Johannesburg’s cultural landscape, bringing together people from different backgrounds through the transformative power of song.
ICONS takes place on 27 June with afternoon and evening performances available. Get your tickets here.
