The Soweto Punk Festival is back with a badass line-up of Pan African artists

Though it makes total sense that a subculture born from disenfranchisement and youthful anarchy would flourish in a space as historically and socially significant as South Africa’s largest urban settlement, coupling “Soweto” and “punk rock” contradicted the general perceptions of both. The grassroots scene, planted in the soil of Soweto by local skaters and backyard rock and rollers, has had time to outgrow that initial astonishment, but remains one of South Africa’s most vital DIY scenes.

The Soweto Punk Festival, founded by Tshepang Ramoba of the band BLK JKS, has become one of the scene’s most anticipated annual gatherings. Now in its third edition, the festival will bring together some of the most exciting alternative artists from across the continent on June 15th to celebrate Youth Day. Significantly, this year the festival is partnering with Boiler Room to expand beyond a one and done event —  this year’s instalment comes in the form of a two-date tour that’ll showcase local and international talent.

Ahead of the main event, the tour will open at Johannesburg bar Smoking Kills on June 12 with performances from Anti Lover and Aura Electric, among other local bands. The main event takes place at Native Rebels on 15 June, featuring headliners Internet Girl alongside an impressive lineup that includes Zondo Commission, Ganga Jaji, Two, and Shameless.

Joining them is a standout international artist: genre deviant Lesotho rapper Morena Leraba. With genres ranging from punk, hip-hop and alternative rock, the festival is expanding in exciting new directions, promising a unique experience for music lovers looking to discover something new.

Speaking on the significance of this year’s festival, Ramoba said: “We have two shows this year, and we are proud of that. Every act on this bill was chosen with intention. This is not a numbers game; it is a curation.”

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience one of Africa’s most exciting alternative music showcases. Grab your tickets and be part of the movement.
