At the heart of Bash Tru’s debut single “Motion Picture,” is distance. You hear it as soon as you hit play – distorted and ghostly.
Formed between Johannesburg and Berlin, the post-punk outfit brings together childhood friends Seb and Oz, who grew up in the same area code of the 011 before relocating to Germany, where they met Irish musician Kian at pub in Neukölln. Their debut release exists in the space between those two cities: one remembered, one inhabited.
Drawing inspiration from contemporary post-punk heavyweights like Fontaines D.C., Wunderhorse, and The Murder Capital, Bash Tru arrive with a clear sense of identity already intact. That also arrive built for the stage. Having already performed across venues in both Johannesburg and Berlin, their chemistry is the sort of thing that can only happen live, will all of them together in the room.
That’s why “Motion Picture” was recorded live. The track savours tension. The track unfolds patiently across four minutes, its restless guitars and vulnerable vocals building towards a catharsis that feels earned rather than engineered. While the band now calls Berlin home, the song’s lyrical focus remains firmly fixed on Johannesburg, exploring memory, displacement, and the lingering pull of the places that shape us.
“Motion Picture is something we wrote that was wholly autobiographical — a period of my life, around Joburg City,” say Seb and Oz. Sharing the lengthy process from writing to creating the track’s striking music video, Seb and Oz say, “After recording in Berlin we came to do an 8 show tour of South Africa in December 2025, and managed to carve out some time to make the video.” Though they were in no rush, making sure they took their time to get things right. “As long as it’s impactful,” they say.
