Francois van Coke and Hunter Kennedy make braaing a Olympic sport in “Aksie Braai”

Ever wondered what burnout wrapped in a braai song would look like? Of course you have.

Francois van Coke and Hunter Kennedy, who have been writing songs together for a good 23 years, wondered this very same thing, which is how “Aksie Braai” was born. However the inspiration for the music video came from a rather unlikely source.

“About 20 years ago we read an interview with the legendary Springbok, Os du Randt,” Francois tell me. “In the interview they asked him ‘what is your favourite movie’ and his answer was ‘action’. They also asked him ‘what is your favourite food’. He answered ‘braai’. We thought it was very funny – ‘action braai’. We joked about it for a while and Hunter even had it as his Facebook bio for a while – ‘action braai’.”

Teaming up with Sweetmeats Creative for the video, the emo lyrics are juxtaposed with what can only be described as Braai Olympic Games. Francois and Hunter take on the roles of underdogs who compete against serious professional braai competitors, competing a boerewors relay, a potjie power race and other challenges.

Francois and Hunter have a knack for not taking themselves too seriously when they collab, and this was the perfect song and video to let their freak braai flags to fly. And while Heritage Day might be over, the smell of that burning wood will still linger long enough for you to get your “Aksie Braai” on.
