How do you transition from being the frontman of one of the biggest South African bands to maintaining a steady solo career or, more difficult yet, breaking out of that fixed mould in which your discography and image has placed you in? Against all odds Kahn Morbee has managed it seamlessly and his path continues to burgeon.
Morbee’s debut solo album “Salt” becomes a literal manifestation of what he’s trying to prove his worth in and he does it quite superbly. It’s almost as though this was the album that Morbee always wanted to make, filled with poetic, rhythmic prose and a folky undercurrent, a side to him that many will be pleasantly surprised to discover, perhaps for the first time.
Staple, universal themes of value, love et al are explored delicately against jangling banjos, tinkling tambourines and wailing country-laced beats and I can’t help but love how unobtrusive and relaxed it all is – save for title track ‘Salt’, that shakes things up with its heavy bassline, reverberating electric guitar and deep drum rolls.
SA Artist Spotlight sat down with Morbee to find out a little bit more about his solo adventures, pending fatherhood, his musical freedom and being the captain of his own ship.
