Bougain Village is a musical project created by Sean Ross and Loren de Vos and our introduction to them is a track titled ‘Noctural’, an ambient blend of layered instrumental and electronic stylings, laced with floaty, ethereal vocals. ‘Nocturnal’ is built from the ground up, with keyboard-crafted melody deftly stacked within layers upon layers of sighing synths, pattering percussion, and delicately tinkling interspersions. Scattered use of cricket-like chirps and a variety of nightly noises maintain a patent connection with the title.
An almost entirely melody-driven track peppered with rare snatches of indistinct, silvery vocals ‘Nocturnal’, despite its multi-layered quality, maintains a distinctly hollow sound throughout, giving the constant impression of space. This is further demonstrated with the incorporation of bells and lilting strings.
The overall feel of the song connotes a dreamlike state, with its four minutes leisurely unravelling as if in a daze. The melody alternately dips and returns dramatically in a series of gorgeously eerie moments.
Let’s watch this space eagerly, yes?
