Desmond & The Tutus: Enjoy Yourself

Indie rock it-boys Desmond & the Tutus’ new album opens with ‘Tearing Up (Big Guns)’, a frisky, guitar-driven power jam, perfect for when you’re in an air-guitar kind of mood. The track sets the tone for the rest of the album, letting you know that you’re in for some bouncy and cheerful listening material.

The already-familiar opening notes of ‘Youth Group Leader’ gets the listener ready for three minutes of relaxed swaying and nostalgia. As the band describes it, the track is an ode to “lost youth, past sexiness, and the shaping of young minds.” While the story told in the lyrics is undoubtedly an interesting one, it’s the song’s attention-grabbing chorus and infectious guitar riffs that will entice you to press repeat.

When the opening notes of ‘Pretoria Girls’ ring through most people’s speakers, they take it as their cue to turn up the volume and sing along to the mesmerising chorus. Having become somewhat of an anthem in the Jacaranda City, this track is dance-worthy and it’s brief, yet powerful guitar solo is sure to lift moods wherever it is heard.

‘Teenagers’ is yet another track that evokes wistfulness in the listener. The track’s dream-like melody will appeal to your inner ‘90s kid, and might make you reminisce about teenage years gone by. The song’s video helps to visualize this idea, and even ends in a raucous pool party similar to one you’ve probably been to at some point in your younger years.

‘What Am I Gonna Do with You’ commands the listener’s attention from the very beginning. Its strident melody and powerful drum accompaniment make it striking. ‘Trust Fund Love’ carries on this lively atmosphere. With a riff that draws its inspiration from old school rock, the track shows off a new side of the band without trading their trademark playfulness.

Summery and relaxing, ‘Lazy Bones’, ‘Naked Females’ and ‘Little One’ are typical teasing Tutus tracks. Breaking slightly away from this peaceful tone, ‘Boogie Man’ starts out slightly more ominously, before becoming talky and spirited once more.

‘Roll Me Out’ makes for a spellbinding listen and closes the album off effectively with its groove-inspired guitars. Overall, “Enjoy Yourself” is an album that allows you to do exactly that each time you listen to it, making for an unadulterated Desmond & the Tutus experience.
