Pedro Barbosa: Reborn

After spending a large amount of time gigging, attempting to make his mark on SA’s music scene, Mozambique-born Pedro Barbosa has taken a step into the unknown by releasing his debut solo album, “Reborn.”

While most of Barbosa’s previous work has been rock-based, this album ventures into new avenues as he searches for his own musical identity. With elements of funk, acoustic-rock, soul, and R&B this offering has something that will suit almost everyone’s musical palate.

Never straying far from his rock ‘n’ roll roots, Barbosa livens things up after ‘Weight On Me,’ an R&B-based confession, with the funk-laden second track ‘Strangers In the Night,’ a toe-tapping, head-bopping tribute to the care-free disco era. The unescapable toe-tapping energy carries on until the album touches down gently with the acoustic ballad ‘Once You Were Two.’ A gentle, heart-warming song written seemingly for a child who is attempting to finding their feet and way in the world.

“Reborn” is a tame, cautious foray into the solo world for Barbosa, but has the potential to be a stepping stone to much bolder, more confident offerings.
