cockles. (Alastair Thomas) has teamed up with Dolph (Dan McCauley and Jesse Coetsee) again to produce an even stranger video for his latest single ‘Narcissist’.
I very clearly remember Thomas and his twenty-piece band (okay, maybe it was more like a seven-piece, but fuck there were a lot of them onstage) performing ‘Narcissist’ at Oppikoppi.
It was one of the best songs from that set because it suits Thomas’ onstage persona to a T – there was even a point he was so disinterested in the track that he didn’t even finish a handful of lyrics, opting for a sort of whine-along instead.
Pure narcissism. Pure smarts.
Just like ‘Joshin’ Around’, the video for ‘Narcissist’ was shot in one day, but the animation took a good few months.
The decision to work with Dolph again wasn’t even up for debate as Thomas explains, “I’m a huge fan of Dolph’s work, so it was a no-brainer for me to ask them to do this video too. As with the ‘Joshin’ Around’ video, we came up with a vague concept together and then Dan and Jesse just took it to a whole new realm of weirdness after the fact – and I couldn’t be more stoked with the final product.”
This video is perfect for a mid-November Monday morning when you’re desperately trying to motivate yourself but the cupboard is bare AF. It’s typical tongue-in-cheek cockles. humour, complete with a split second image of him wanking into his ballet tutu-shaped cloud.
To me it feels like cockles. is everything that Thomas wanted to do with Shortstraw in the beginning, but didn’t for whatever reason. I suppose it helps when the only greater creative entity you’re answering to is yourself.
