Hitchat Entertainment just teamed up some of the finest talent from across Philippi, Khayelitsha and Nyanga to assemble T.!.A – otherwise known as This !s Africa – and they’ve just dropped a vibrant video to accompany their debut, “You Taught Me Well”.
Hitchat have coined the genre T-POP – a multi-layered Afro-pop composition packed full of vibe – and they’re debuting it with their very first artist collective and a fiery release spruced up by Swedish producer Saturday, Monday.
“You Taught Me Well” keys in its touch points through a polished combination of modern pop hooks, dreamy electronicism and an Afro-percussive beat, allowing the six artists to slot into their respective spaces while never overwhelming the track as a whole. We’ve got Ameerah, Mandila and Sisipho on vocals, Vocal Zoid cutting shapes as lead dancer, NossTheBoss dropping bars, and finally ringleader Mr H, a rapper straight out of Philippi. It’s an impressive collective – each piecing carefully into an expert puzzle.
The visual which comes along with it adds just the vibrant touch needed to really drive the track home. The epitome of African contemporary culture, dazzling outfits cut shapes in an old concrete warehouse and on Cape Town city rooftops. It’s striking and fraught with texture, viewed through an almost vintage lens and packed with neo-pop zest for life.
