Heralding 2021 with her latest single “GONG”, Anna Wolf continues to develop her hypnotic and emotive sound. Wolf’s previous work has not shied from investigating the more off-centered topics, and “GONG” is no exception.
Lyrically layered in meaning, it weaves a narrative around the transitional space between living, dying, and consequential ego death. She reflects on an accidental overdose, where death becomes apparent and we slip into a nearby distant world as captivating as it is curious and poignant.
Drawing us into her evocative subject matter, the accompanying music video explores a visual tension.
Set in an autumn forest, we follow Wolf battling a force which tugs at her: a contrasting white sheet wrapped around her waist. Clad in black, her body and confrontational facial expressions reflect her song’s provocative material, emphasized with intimate close-ups. The dark, blue-toned cinematic style is reminiscent of a thriller film- camera shake, and selective focus accentuates the ethereal and eerie mood.
The track is resonant and hits deep. Wolf’s at times operatic siren song ties seamlessly with a subversive soundscape. The overarching dark feel of “GONG” supported by a marching drum and climaxed with a rock, guitar-driven centerpiece that leaves you pulsing.
A striking start to the year, Wolf continues to push the envelope of her very own sound.
