Pop. Trap. Mbaqanga. Hip hop.
Once again the Cape Town-based rapper, artist and fashion designer, GREEK. (real name, Luvo Mahangu) has skilfully threaded genres together to create the vibrant sonic tapestry that is the second instalment of his EP mini-series, The Yung Lorenzo Tapes Vol. 2.
The Yung Lorenzo Tapes is a two-part project that grew in an environment which GREEK. landscaped for the sole purpose of creating purely and freely and it is because of this landscape that the considered creative continues to defy genres.
Neatly hemmed with heady beats, Vol 2’s four-track collection follows seven months after Vol 1. and is more experimental than its three-track predecessor exploring elements of soulful, introspective raps, to bouncy interchanges between Xhosa and English raps like on the EP’s single “SBALI” co-produced by GREEK. alongside frequent collaborators Baby Driver and Orish.
Pegged to be a fan-favourite, Mbhaqanga-influenced trap closer “NTOMBI YASE KOMANI” certainly gets my vote as the top track of the project next to silky smooth opener, “MAMA PRADA ME” both of which contain some cutting bars, so listen closely.
The Yung Lorenzo Tapes Vol. 2. is a bopping banger of an EP intended to pacify GREEKS.’ fans while he fashions his debut mixtape set to drop later in the year and it’s sure to be a showstopper.
