From the outset, this track really just begs the question – who is Andrew? And in keeping with his enigmatic prose, M Field never really answers that question. Take it as a metaphor, if you must put some meaning behind it – “Andrew” might just be a feeling. But I digress.
M Field – who also forms one third of the SAMA-winning, internationally-lauded, and recently rather absent band Beatenberg – is on a solo trajectory at the moment. “Andrew” – following hot on the heels of its predecessors “Gargoyle” and “Leafy Outlook” – serves as his third single ahead of an imminent EP release which is due to hit the airwaves in September.
There’s nothing inherently groundbreaking about “Andrew” – for all intents and purposes, Field’s solo work is simply an extension of his body of work with Beatenberg. The poetic licence is still there, while chiming, charming synth and guitar lines hold the fort. That being said, it’s as much of a delightful indie-pop landscape as his sound has ever been.
The accompanying video is as polished as it is enigmatic – following the footsteps of M Field, the cultured Capetonian, as he strolls from from coffee shop dates turned jam sessions, to contemporary art galleries, round to Green Point sunset rugby training. I’m not quite sure what it all means but it sounds as pretty as a picture.
