Josh Moreira’s debut EP Homegrown is here and it’s an ode to his homeland

At barely 18, it’s abundantly clear that Josh Moreira has a great appreciation for music and the vast potential of sound. His debut EP, Homegrown, shines a spotlight on his multi-instrumentalist background as he masterfully plays around with sounds and textures to create a uniquely eclectic yet pop-leaning offering.

The seven track EP – which, in true lockdown style, saw Moreira masterfully slip into the everyman role of singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, mixer, master-er and producer – is, at its core, a candid ode to the ups and downs of being young. Reflective in a way that’s equal parts poignant and joyful, Homegrown features simple yet evocative lyricism from Moreira which is brought to life by his mellifluous vocals.

An amalgamation of sounds that at times sound as though they shouldn’t really work together but somehow do, the EP incorporates everything from quirky electronic elements and affable guitar to melancholic piano and the occasional arbitrary sound clip to create an atmospheric and compelling sound that somehow still manages to have a distinctly pop essence.

From the cute-yet-soppy romanticism of “You’re Beautiful” to the radio-readiness of “Nike Airs”, each track comes across as authentic, honest and true to himself – and for a debut EP, what more could you really want?
