Mamma Mia! ABBA is back after 40 years with new music and a virtual concert

This is not a drill! ABBA, one of the most successful music groups of all time are back after nearly 40 years.

The pop group held a special livestream on 2 September to announce a new studio album and a new concert which will see Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus performing digitally via avatars – or ABBAtars if you like.

All the members (all in their 70s) performed in motion-capturing suits with an 850-strong team from Industrial Light & Magic to make their ABBAtars come to life. The band also specifically decided to go above and beyond by building an arena specifically for this concert in London called “ABBA Voyage”.

The name of the album is Voyage and will be released worldwide on 5 November and to satisfy the long wait for new music (they have been promising since 2018) they released two new songs “I Still Have Faith in You” and “Don’t Shut Me Down”. This is the first new material since the release of the “Under Attack” single in 1982.

“To all of you who patiently have followed us in some way or another these past decades: Thank you for waiting — it’s time for a new journey to begin,” the Swedish group said in a statement.

Even though most of their fans weren’t even born the time they were active, they have garnered a pretty solid fanbase and listening to their music it’s quite clear: they’re timeless.
