The Foo Fighters are Global Icons as they accept the award at this year’s MTV VMA’s

The MTV VMA’s Global Icon Award “celebrates an artist/band whose unparalleled career and continued impact and influence has maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond,” so it was fitting that the Foo Fighters took home the honour at this year’s ceremony.

Inspired by MTV’s Europe Music Awards’ Global Icon Award, this is the first time the accolade was awarded at the VMAs and they hit the nail on the head with their first honouring.

“It’s quite an award to receive — we’ve been a band for 26 years, so it feels pretty good!” said lead singer Dave Grohl while accepting the award.

For the first time since 2007, the soon to be Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees rocked a medley of 1999’s “Learn to Fly,” 2021’s “Shame Shame,” and 1997’s “Everlong” on the VMA stage.

Drummer Taylor Hawkins had the words “Charlie RIP” featured on his drum set in a poignant nod to late Rolling Stones drummer, Charlie Watts.
