Flock of Robin (aka Robin Williams) first joined forces with Your Brain On mid year with the release of their scintillating collaborative single “Discovery” – a pop-infused head-bop of a semi-acoustic foray into mild electronic waters.
Being the clean cut classic’s they are though, they reunited recently for an entirely acoustic, sweepingly cinematic, and unexpectedly moving rendition of the track, filmed in a cozy, sunsoaked, plant-fringed corner of Ollyvan’s Studios, by Art-hub Productions.
This time around the track builds, brick by brick, pulling through a percussive beat from the cajon (Owald van Schalkwyk), an acoustic guitar line, and a chiming piano backbone before Williams’ liquid-velvet vocals spill over the top – and Daniel Nuttall pulls through for a welcome electro-guitar riff and some soothing vocalism too.
But it’s the new integration of the cello which really carries the track. It’s played by the deft fingers of co-vocalist Ethan Lawson, and he changes tack between classic styles and a vibrant rhythmic pizzicato technique which lends a zesty edge to the whole thing.
In fact, there’s something alluring and somehow recently retro about this rendition of the track. And when I say retro, I’m only throwing it back ten years or so to a time when this sort of indelible wholesomeness in music was a little more common.
