There’s something about imminent summer holidays that makes a fresh electro banger really hit home. DJ duo brothers Kyle and Austin Cassim – who won EDM hearts with an unprecedented debut performance at WONDERLAND Festival 2015 – just teamed up with USA R&B and gospel legend Kathy Brown for a thumper of a summer anthem: a reimagined rendition of Jill Scott’s “Golden”.
Not quite what I was expecting but damn does it deliver. The Benoni born-and-bred brothers stitch together EDM, dance, and pop with a whiff of whatever strikes their fancy at the time. This time around it’s a gospel-soul sort of nuance: a funk-pop backbone off which Brown’s roof-raising vocals sky-rocket.
The boys flex their production skills with finesse as they build dynamic synth textures up against striking keys before a bulbous beat drops hard. Hard enough to make you wanna jump – not quite hard enough to warrant a set after 11pm. But that’s the point.
They’ve taken Scott’s 2007 hit and moulded it to their liking – with enough dexterity and homage to the original – turning a crooning soul ballad into the anthem of your summer. And with an abundance of international opportunities just waiting to be mined, we’re just out here hoping the world’s planning on cooperating.
