It’s been almost three years since Msaki and Tresor last teamed up – their chart-topping, dreamy banger “Sondela” has amassed over five million YouTube views to date – and they’re back at it again with a swoon-worthy love song which drops today of all days, for your post-Valentine’s indulgence.
“Hold Me Down”, off Msaki’s double album Platinumb Heart Open, follows much in the same vein both artists have been following for the last few years: it’s a synth-topped, gorgeous narrative pivoted off a driving, almost delicate, house beat. It’s bred to make you move as much as move you.
When I say move you, I mean these guys are out here tugging at the heartstrings hard with this one. “If it’s alright/ can I plan for a life with you in mind/ just you and me now,” comes the prevailing, crooning chorus line – and yes, it’s alright with me.
If that’s not enough to tickle your heartstrings, the music video will do it for you. Shot with a series of old school cameras and techniques (which reminds me a lot of “Sondela”), it’s a grainy, desaturated, wholesome visual which tallies up a montage of cutesy frames – from warm, wooden, fairy-light-strewn rooms, to park frolics as seen through the lens of an old Rolleicord.
At its core, “Hold Me Down” is about the whirlwinds of love and how you have to constantly work at maintaining a healthy and happy relationship.
