Take a trip down ’70s rock lane with Die Horries on their first album, A Little Dirt

It was intended to be released in 2020, just in time for STRAB, but covid took this project and ensured it got some extra TLC – and now Die Horries present their first album A Little Dirt.

A standout factor in this band are the killer vocals of frontwoman Vici Maud. In a world where frontwomen are pretty scarce, it is a point of pride that we can boast such an iconic voice in South Africa.

The five-piece band are diverse in their sound, which is encapsulated in the album by bringing in elements of jazz, psychedelic funk – and, predominantly, pure rock n roll.

The track which caught my attention was “Driftwood” with its Stranger Things synth intro moving on to a more western blues track. Definitely a track for your next space cowboy movie.

Then there’s “Dirt”, with its grungy distorted bass which then suddenly changes into a completely different song just after the two-minute mark. It might take you by surprise but there’s an element to it that will have you straight out vibing.

One thing is clear, Die Horries have had some time to grow since starting off at the tail end of 2017, and the potential for more is an open field. What’s for certain is that these are going to be killer songs to perform live – suffice it to say I’m backing this female-fronted band hard.
