Band Or Bust: Metro Villa chat their high energy set ahead of round 2 at The House of Machines

Metro Villa is an alternative rock band from Cape Town who got together in 2019 and after playing a round of live shows in 2022, released their debut single “Sort Yourself Out” at the end of the year while more recently, they released their next single “Vodka and Smoke”, taking them in a heavier musical direction.

We caught up with them before their performance at Band Or Bust at The House Of Machines this Friday.

Texx: Give us a bit of background into your band- who are you and where are you from?

We’re all from Cape Town, born and raised. Cam lived in the UK for a bit and was in a band called ANKR. Dan and Cam connected on a Facebook musicians group, and Jono is Cam’s cousin so that naturally fell into place. So that’s where the band sort of started. Eventually, Dan met Damon at a jam at Mocke Road Studios that are now closed, and asked to him to play bass for us.

We all have very similar but also very different musical tastes, which is cool because we all have our own perspectives on songwriting, which adds to the music you know.

Texx: In your own words, what kind of music do you make?

I’d say a mix between alt rock and indie rock. Definitely do love the heavier side of things, but we like to mix it up. Writing songs with high energy which can get peeps to relate and move to is the goal.

Texx: Sum up your live show in one short sentence?

High energy, sweaty and sore knees.

Texx: What’s been the highlight of your musical journey so far?

Opening for aKING was a highlight. Having grown up listening to their music it felt really great to share the stage with them. And they were obviously fantastic that night.

Texx: What do you think you bring to the Final 6 that makes you stand out?

A love for music, and a high energy set. We like playing the music we make, because it’s the kind of music we want to be listening to. But our main focus is making the set a massive party. We want people to come to our shows and leave with sore necks, hence the focus on high energy.

Texx: Which act out of the Final 6 do you rate highly and why?

Luukhanyo is amazing. The band is great and his flow and lyrics are incredible. The next big thing for sure.

Texx: If you could pick any of the judges to drink with who would you pick and why – and what would you be drinking?

Elle E. We got to play with her for the aKING gig. She’s bad ass and I need her to teach me guitar. For the drink, we’d be drinking beer. Or straight vodka and ice, it’s a band favourite!

Metro Villa takes on Master Kii at The House Of Machines this Friday 12 May at 9pm.
