Ava like Lava is lost in the crowd in her new video for “90s Anxiety”

Ava like Lava‘s upcoming project, Malice in Wonderland, is set to be her most in-depth look into herself and her latest single and video, “90s Anxiety”, is a glimpse into just that.

Ava like Lava, has proven herself a master of genre bending. On a song that deals with an issue many of us are too familiar with, she shows off an effortless movement between pop, R&B and hip-hop. The catchy song is carried by a hook that conveys that feeling that sits uncomfortably in the pit of your stomach even in situations where you’re meant to be happy. “Feel like imma need a moment”, she sings before launching into the chorus.

The video is filled with bright colours and lively faces at a party, but in between is Ava’s experience, marred by an uneasiness and an inability to fall into the mood. Flat on her back in a bathroom trying to hold it together, her phone rings periodically, interrupted by featured artist Young Pacino, who delivers his verse on the streets of London.

“90s Anxiety” is a relatable and easy to digest single, while the video conveys its message beautifully – but perhaps the true star of this song is how the collaboration between the artists brings it to life. The song, in part, is a celebration of their heritage with each delivering lines in Persian, and the sheer ease and brilliance with which they carry a delicate but frequently covered topic is effortlessly fresh and inspiring.
