In true form, Dope Saint Jude pulls no punches in her searingly bold new single and video “Alphas”. Ripping down the archetype of the alpha male with characteristic cheek, the track unpacks just what it is to reclaim the alpha figure in a queer dynamic.
What might it look like? Equality within partnership, that’s what. Eschewing seriousness in favour of a tongue-in-cheek statement delivered via a fibrillating, mechanistic beat, Dope Saint Jude has just dropped the boldest queer anthem Pride Month has seen so far.
A couple of months ago she put a call out to the Cape Town queer community and roped in a gorgeous motley troupe of people from all walks of life to feature in the equally brazen music video.
“We can both be Alphas/ Like it when you play with me/ Like it when you gay with me,” Dope Saint Jude raps over the abrasive beat, while her gorgeously diverse crew of queer creatives cut bold shapes through an ever-shifting camera lens. It’s a knife-sharp subversion of an outdated mode of thought, delivered with a playful flip of the coin. It’s sexy, it’s cutting and it’s unapologetically authentic.
