Evan Hope flexes infectious self-assurance in his latest single “Summer Fling”

Even Hope heads to the Cape for his latest offering. Set against the backdrop of the winding coastal roads of the deep south “Summer Fling” sees the Durban native drop bars from behind the wheel of a bright red Shelby Cobra, getting real on varsity heartbreak and elite social challenges.

Countering the introspective tone of his debut “Feel Alive”, his latest takes its cues from Pharell’s minimalist genius, hinging on clean jazzy chords and a heady rhythm section. “Summer Fling” doesn’t really seem to be about, well, a summer fling, though. Instead it serves as a commentary of the challenges of one’s varsity years.

Hope pulls no punches in exploring the nuance of navigating his peers in a private college and simultaneously grappling heartache. But unapologetic swagger oozes from behind the wheel of his scarlet classic, eyes glinting through his sunset shades.

Here and there the lighting feels a bit glaring, the videography a touch gauzy, the track itself erring on the basis of monotony – but beneath it all is a guy with a whole lot of passion and potential just about ready to be unleashed.
