It’s no secret that artists from the Limpopo have been working relentlessly to be recognised as some of the best in the country and John Lundun is no exception. Following a string of successes in recent years, including a rack of nominations for the Limpopo Music Awards, the artist and producer is back with an EP titled, Aries.
The EP is the embodiment of Afro tech: a short but impactful illustration of Lundun’s production skills. Opener, “Ngiyabonga” lays the groundwork for a project full of surprises and flexing a unique blend of influence. Much of Aries is a marriage of two different approaches to making dance music. There are the quintessential African drums and small nuances rooted in traditional music, and then the stalwart electronic elements that offer up a contemporary sound to the music and elevate the sound to new heights.
It’s and effortlessly uplifting offering. “One Day” and “Crown” convey stories of overcoming the odds to carve out a better life. The spirit of resilience carried through music which is bred to get people moving further marks Lundun’s effort as something special and roots it deeper into its African inspiration.
Aries is a valiant effort that carries some of the resounding aspects that have made South African house music some of the best in the world. As “Nyigabonga” proclaims, the best is yet to come and Lundun’s trajectory is only upward.
