Band or Bust winners Metro Villa are keeping things varied when it comes to their rock approach. Off the back of the indie proclivities of their debut single “Sort Yourself Out” and the decidedly heavier, grunge-infused tangent of their follow up “Vodka and Smoke”, their latest single leans in a decidedly more contemporary direction.
“Michelle” keeps things fairly even keel with this approach in mind. Hinged on clean-cut riffage, backed up by a muddied guitar line to keep things gritty, it’s an infectious energy-fuelled kick-back at a lover who doesn’t value you enough – steeped in regret and confusion, hidden beneath a head-banging veneer.
“Michelle, it’s been a while and I hope you’re well/ ’cause this hell is tearing me apart/ wide awake, can’t you see/ you can count me a sweetheart endlessly,” spills over a sound that smacks delightfully of the South Africa rock scene circa 2013, and Metro Villa flexes their versatility as they bounce around the broad parameters of the rock scope.
