Some.Unique.Individual’s latest EP, Sunset Drive, is a hazily euphoric pop ride

Honing in on all the best bits of ’80s-esque pop, Some.Unique.Individual’s latest EP, Sunset Drive, is just that – a sonic trip into the setting sun.

Straddling the millenium hurdle, he strikes an infectious balance between ’80’s style synth and modern R&B parameters, delivering an EP whose driving beats and liquid production oozes dynamic appeal. It also serves as a tribute to, and the final collaborative effort of, the late producer Kupakwashe Kambasha, and his contribution shines.

Pivoted off the thrills and chills of love, every track is thrill inducing. Heady liquid synth spills over it all, suspending the entire EP in a sort of sonic haze. Indie pop verses lead the charge, while lilting R&B influence threads through it all.

Opener “Feel Alive” is bred to make you feel it – think sultry, swoony love letters to life – while “Rock Shandy” hinges on a jazzy guitar cadence through its unadulterated doting. “Paradise BlueSkies” gets a punchy, languid bassline, packed with sonic daydreams and effervescent memories before “Forever” ties the ribbon on the project as it wraps the listener up in an infectious promise for it all.

As much a tribute EP as it is an upwelling expression of adoration, Sunset Drive is a gorgeously defined exploration of genre.
