Cape Town singer-songwriter aboynamedblu has made our heads turn ever since he slipped quietly onto the scene in 2021. After a whirlwind back-to-back release of three EPs in less than a year, he’s taken his time since the release of I Heard You Tried to Fight The Sky in late 2022 to drop fresh sound.
Ahead of his imminent EP which is due to drop this very month, he delivers “sierra” – a searing, emotionally-fraught indie-pop ode to loved ones lost. Channeling fine-tuned guitar melody, pitching vocals and a sweeping, atmospheric chorus which comes around with pillowy nuance, aboynamedblu flexes his sonic dexterity with every bar.
Penned after the loss of one of his best friends, “sierra” holds an ocean of feeling beneath its gauzy exterior. Listen closely and you might just find yourself wrapped up in the gossamer-fine grief of it all – the searingly poetic lyrics plucking at the heartstrings: “Had the velvet lining in your casket made/ what an ostentatious way to go.”
Hinged on masterful production and presiding authenticity, aboynamedblu keeps the good things coming.
