When I read that JonnyGuy lives on a little tropical island in the Caribbean, I was both equal parts jealous and impressed.
While watching the video for ‘Barriers’, my mouth was hanging open the whole time at how gob-smackingly gorgeous the setting is. What I also love about the video is that it’s not the kind of island vibe footage that is centered on wealth, champagne and bikini-clad babes. Instead, the whole mood is more about taking a deep breath, stepping into the sun and properly appreciating the day-to-day beauty that the world has to offer.
The JonnyGuy band look like your regular guys in boardies that you’d spot in Muizenberg and their music has a laid-back reggae energy but ‘Barriers’ is not your average reggae song. There is a strong rock element in the build-up of the guitar for the chorus and the overall progression of the song gives the track a modern edge which makes me think that this single is going to reach a wide audience, not just those hitting the waves on the weekend.
