Ethyl Ether takes you on a questionable trip through their psych-infused video for “Ode”

If you haven’t heard of Agro-pop yet – likely, since Ethyl Ether coined the term themselves – then you’re missing out. In a time where pure rock has gone steadily out of fashion, Ethyl Ether keeps things interesting with a stoner-rock slant, rough enough around the edges to satisfy the heavier rock cravings.

“Ode” comes off their latest album, Chrome Neon Jesus, and is making a comeback with a colour-trip of a visual. Drawing from the psych-infused influence of the track itself – think tempered riffage, jangling ’70s-reminiscent melody-lines and growling vocals – the video is a simplistic amalgamation of performance footage, overlapping and fringed in acid-esque colour.

While the track delivers a hearty smack of well-rounded composition, the video falls a little flat in its simplicity – and when pitted against the likes of starkly unsettling “Therapy?” which dropped earlier this year. It’s got enough hints of psychedelia in the colour-scheme to keep it rolling, but not nearly enough to set it apart.

Which leaves a thriving track to keep the somewhat lacklustre video afloat – and it more than does the job.
