Durban raised and Cape Town based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Bob Ele has released a brand new single and it’s the audial hug we all need.
An injection of wholesomeness that is filled with warmth and effortlessly easy to listen to, “Elizabeth” couldn’t have come at a better time as we all flounder around for something vaguely uplifting.
Bringing with it a heady dose of the whimsical, equable and intimate appeal that characterises bedroom pop, the song is a soft, summery soundscape, filled with sweeping melodies of twinkling synths and glimmering guitar chords. A ballad at its core, “Elizabeth” balances a hint of melancholy with quiet contentedness, as its sincere lyrics speak of love in the face of adversity or, in this case, long distance. Polished, yet retaining the authentic charm of home production, the song accentuates Ele’s soulful vocals and their distinctive light rasp.
The accompanying video complements the song with its softness, simplicity and sincerity. Directed and shot by Mementohmori, the intimate video is devoid of theatrics as it follows Ele, either cutting a lonely figure or accompanied by his lover, across various locations in Cape Town. Wholesome, really.
