Get nostalgic with The Tarantulips and their pure indie banger titled “Run Away”

You might remember Nic Dinnie from the raucous extravaganzas that were Desmond and the Tutu’s  gigs pre-2017. These days he’s taken up residence on the island of Jersey, which is floating a little off the coast of France, governed cozily by the UK – and he’s leading a bit of a new life.

Cue the fresh start which led to him joining forces with Jon Caws (drums) and Elisa Da Silva (bass) to create the formidable trio that is The Tarantulips. They dropped their debut in 2018 (“Keep Up”), and a couple of tracks in 2019 (“Apple” and “Mayonnaise”), before the pandemic sent them into a recluse studio bubble that spawned a whole lot of fresh material.

That’s where “Run Away” comes in. It’s a gorgeously pure-indie throwback of a track if I ever heard one. Not that we’re throwing it back very far – circa 2012 to be precise, but still. Heady, driving bass and drums meets a familiar jangling guitar line that’s as soothing as it is geared to make you move. Dinnie’s vocals breeze over the top, spinning a tale of making the most of this life and now I want them on a Park Acoustics stage.

The accompanying video, filmed by Kazien Creative and featuring cameo appearances from some of Jersey’s stars in music, TV  and theatre, tracks a cutesy narrative over overlapping lives: the mundane and the extraordinary alike. It’s simple – but that’s how we like it, often – and it’s delightfully, entirely, quintessential indie.
