Jozi hailing beat-maker, bassist and rapper Sam Turpin drops his new track, “Broken Mirror”, which provides a minimalist platform for him to explore familiar tropes with a fresh eye.
Off the back of a brief hiatus from his solo work – which was largely due to his position as bassist in The Charles Gené Suite, and a collaborative project with producer Illna N aptly titled Cold Chinese Food – “Broken Mirrors” serves as a check-up on the moral compass, and an exploration of his life at large right now.
The minimal track comes along with an animated visual which sees a motley crew of adventurers navigating a desert by camel. And as much as it’s delightfully reminiscent of Vox Machina (the D&D-inspired series which has taken the relevant scene by storm) I can’t quite see the connection to the track itself.
Which brings me to the track. Pivoted off a pretty, singing harp melody and a moody bass line, Turpin drops snappy narrative verses which spin a tale of rising from depression to navigating the many trials and pitfalls of the music industry. It’s an over-familiar storyline, packed with the same tropes we’ve heard countless times, but Turpin somehow delivers with a versatile authenticity which makes it hit just a little differently.
