With a passion for people and drums, Paul Avenant started Ubuntu Jam to see people from different walks of life come together and have fun through the power of music.
From a young age, Paul Avenant wanted to pursue a career as a school teacher, but was unfortunately not afforded the opportunity to study in that direction. Instead of giving up, he decided to pursue his other big passion in life: music.
Paul studied contemporary music performance in Cape Town for three years, majoring in drum kit, and has been playing drums for different bands and working as a session drummer in various projects around Cape Town ever since.
But everyone knows how hard it is to make a living as a full-time musician, so Paul started working as a drum salesman at a music retail store. Over the four years that Paul spent with the store, he learnt a lot about the music industry and met some amazing people, but soon started thinking about how he could combine his passion for music with his original passion for teaching.
Music is expression, but one needs to know the language of music to be able to express yourself. Paul realized that by teaching people something simple like playing a rhythm on a djembe drum as part of a drum circle, one can begin to learn the language of music and experience the great power that music has to bring people together.
Ubuntu Jam is the amalgamation of years of dreaming and yearning towards something that can not only bring joy to people, but also uplift communities and enable people to open up and express themselves.
Ubuntu Jam hosts djembe drumming circles in and around Cape Town, and at it sees people from walks of life coming together through the power of music. Check out more about Ubuntu Jam below.
