Moskitos deliver a sucker punch of psych-rock sensibility in their dual-single music video for “Magazines / Shakes”

Moskitos skidded onto the scene not so long ago – brandishing all the unapologetic flair, balls-to-the-walls zeal, and headbanging riffage you could ask for from a psych-rock renaissance. Following on the heels of their EP, Adieu Or Die, which dropped earlier this year, comes the accompanying video for a dual-single, “Magazines / Shakes”.

Two tracks pretty much bred to collide, “Magazines / Shakes” slide effortlessly into one another, barely noticeable for those of us unwittingly cruising through the audial experience. This is built off a singular bass line, frenetic drums and echoing synth modalities.

The combined track, which clocks in just shy of seven minutes, boasts an extended intro, a frantic and rollicking outro, with a driving narrative sandwiched between which tackles themes of mind control and modern media – and their inevitable combined force.

The music video, hinging on these themes too, was directed by Hough Maritz, Christiaan Jonck, and Pieter Labuschagne – and follows a shadowy figure (Hans Van Vuren) tailing frontman Pieter Labuschagne. Along with some kaleidoscopic renderings of a couple of the band’s Cape Town performances to keep you on your toes.

Expertly delivered with all the gusto, bravado and rip-roaring nonchalance of their chosen genre, Moskitos are here to stay.
