Indie Dog release the first of a trio of singles they’ll be dishing out before their debut album drop – and “Pretty Fool” keeps things grounded with an rough-around-the-edges acoustic narrative on the good things coming.
Pattering percussion and jangling guitars – quintessential to their chosen genre – lead from the front, while a driving, funk-infused bass-line backs things up. There’s an inadvertent DIY quality to the whole thing though – which on first listen comes across as mildly clunky, but by the time the song wraps up it’s morphed into something more wholesomely engaging.
Energy-fuelled and bred to make you bounce, “Pretty Fool” wastes no time in digging into their happy-go-lucky narrative which pivots off the uplifting message of good fortunes to come. And we hope they’re right.
The accompanying video – shot, produced, and edited by Indie Dog themselves – keeps things equally engagingly DIY. The band reel out the track from the bottom of a pool, instruments and all – and as they struggle to remain submerged long enough to mouth a couple of lyrics, I’m irrevocably reminded of that Nirvana album cover. You know the one. Only these guys are fully grown – and fully dressed. And fully committed to making tracks bred to make you move.
